Gleeful book rec for Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy

I am officially skipping work this afternoon so I can read more of the third book of Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy.

Here's how she describes the books:

The zombie apocalypse happened more than twenty years ago. Contrary to popular belief, we didn't all die out, largely because we'd had years of horror movies to tell us how to behave when the dead start walking. We fought back, and we won...sort of. The dead still walk; loved ones still try to eat you if you're not careful; the virus that caused the problem in the first place is still incurable. But at least we lived, right?

The Newsflesh Trilogy is a story about blogging, politics, medical science, espionage, betrayal, the ties that bind, the ties that don't, how George Romero accidentally saved the world, and, of course, zombies.

These books are FAN CRACK. Complete with zombies, bloggers, chosen-family, characters who hit my competence kink, loyalty, and about ten other things I can't mention without spoiling you but trust me, these books were written JUST FOR US.

In fact, I'm pretty sure they really were, and if one of y'all on my reading list turns out to be Mira Grant under another name, I will so not be surprised, because this is just that awesome.

Yes -- that much I knew! I was mostly joking about Seanan being someone on my reading list, though I suppose it's theoretically possible that she could have a second pseud which she uses for fannish things. ;-)

Man, I had the most awesome conversation with a coworker about those books after we'd both finished the third one, but I'm not sure whether I can tell you about it without spoiling yet. :)

I know her IRL, though I haven't had a chance to see her since I moved to Arizona. I've not read those yet, because I really don't like zombies, but I think I shall give them a try, based on your post here.

I finished the trilogy today, with great joy. <3 Totally captivating! Now I'm trawling the AO3 for fic.

I've got the two novellas, but they're more about the zombies and less about the other stuff--and not featuring our beloved Masons or their friends.

And there are some newsflesh stories at the AO3; I've only read a couple, but the one by dira is excellent.

(But I want happy-ending stories for the Masons! I want to see where Shaun and Georgia go now and what kind of adventures they have! or, actually, I think I want curtainfic, God help me; I want to see them happy.)

These books are so good! I bought them, and then I bought more for my little sister.

Good science, too. I approve of her science in building a zombie apocalypse.

The science is fabulous. I had never thought so much about immunology before. This science totally sweeps me off my feet. <3

I love Seanan's other series (Toby Day) - hesitant on this one b/c of the zombies - how graphic are the zombie bits? (I have a serious squick about rotting flesh).

I didn't find the zombie bits to be all that graphic. The books felt to me as though the weren't about the zombies per se; the zombies are a part of the worldbuilding which allows her to tell the story she wants to tell, which is an awesome one.

*cough* Discount Armageddon by her under the name Seanan McGuire, because nothing says one of us like careers in cryptozoology and competitive dance at the same time. Plus talking mice with descriptive religious rituals and folk that bleed antibiotics. Love her mind, seriously.
